The Bank of Greece published an account of discussions with the chairs of the European Central Bank’s Single Supervisory Mechanism and the Single Resolution Board on Greek banks, supervisory priorities and regulatory developments. The authorities assessed the Greek banking sector as substantially stronger, citing cleaner balance sheets, high capital adequacy, sustainable profitability, improved asset quality, robust liquidity and progress on resolvability. The discussions also focused on heightened geopolitical and macroeconomic risks. Governor Yannis Stournaras warned that the war in the Middle East is creating a severe supply-side shock through energy and other prices, requiring banks to remain vigilant to contain credit risk and preserve lending capacity. The European and Greek authorities emphasized continued supervisory coordination, while Stournaras called for the completion of the Banking Union and the Savings and Investments Union.
