The Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA), through Tanzania’s Insurance Commissioner Dr Baghayo Saqware, urged public officials in Geita Region to ensure government assets and large public projects are insured to limit financial losses when disasters occur. The call was made during a regional outreach tour aimed at sensitising regional commissioners, administrative secretaries and public servants on the importance of insurance, as well as informing them about opportunities in the insurance sector including acting as insurance agents and the implementation of the Universal Health Insurance for All law. Geita Regional Administrative Secretary Mohamed Gombati also encouraged government staff to help ensure development projects are protected through insurance so that compensation is available when disasters strike. TIRA’s Director of Insurance Market Supervision Christopher Mapunda linked the initiative to TIRA’s mandate to expand insurance education and uptake, including through collaboration with other stakeholders. The Geita engagement forms part of a wider programme of visits to multiple regions to promote insurance coverage of public assets and broader public understanding of insurance.
