The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported that total US household debt decreased by USD 13 billion, or 0.1%, to USD 18.8 trillion in the second quarter of 2026. Mortgage balances fell by USD 74 billion to USD 13.1 trillion, more than offsetting increases in credit card balances of USD 21 billion to USD 1.26 trillion and auto loan balances of USD 28 billion to USD 1.71 trillion. The share of outstanding debt in some stage of delinquency improved slightly to 4.7%. Transitions into serious delinquency were mostly unchanged, although new auto loan and credit card delinquencies remained elevated. Student loan delinquency data continued to be distorted by the renewed reporting of defaulted student debt. Mortgage originations were broadly steady at USD 505 billion, while auto loan originations increased to USD 211 billion.
