The European Central Bank has outlined proposed accessibility features for the digital euro app, which would provide access to basic digital euro services. The design is intended to exceed the European Accessibility Act and related EN 301 549 standard and apply the highest level of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines adapted for mobile payment applications. Planned features address visual, physical and cognitive barriers through enhanced visual design, keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, time-out warnings, simplified language, error prevention and reduced-motion settings. The proposal has been shared with market participants and other stakeholders after development with consumer organizations, accessibility experts and national central banks. The app will undergo usability and accessibility testing as part of the digital euro pilot launching in 2027, with participation from the ONCE Foundation, the ECB and 19 national central banks. Under the proposed digital euro regulation, the Eurosystem app would be one of several access channels, while payment service providers would remain end users’ main point of contact.
