The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued an alert to the public after reports of fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens related to The Bank of East Asia, Limited, referencing a related bank press release linked from the HKMA website. The HKMA reminded customers that banks will not send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks that direct users to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS (including via embedded hyperlinks). Anyone who has provided personal information or conducted financial transactions via the suspected websites or login screens is advised to contact the bank using the details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force.
