The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) released monthly statistics on Moldova’s non-cash foreign exchange market, covering banks’ purchases and sales of foreign currency against the Moldovan leu and excluding transactions carried out by the NBM. The publication splits activity between the interbank market (bank-to-bank) and the intrabank market (banks with their clients), and reports volumes in euro equivalent. For SPOT transactions, interbank turnover (excluding NBM) totalled EUR 20,856.1 thousand in purchases and EUR 25,855.2 thousand in sales, while intrabank SPOT turnover reached EUR 373,784.06 thousand in purchases and EUR 635,381.5 thousand in sales. Euro and US dollar transactions accounted for the largest reported intrabank SPOT volumes, including EUR 216,616.9 thousand purchased and EUR 338,577.5 thousand sold in euro, and EUR 147,944.7 thousand purchased and EUR 267,106.8 thousand sold in US dollars. No SWAP transactions were recorded, and FORWARD activity was limited to EUR 1,243.2 thousand of intrabank euro sales. The NBM notes that transactions are recorded on the trade date and converted into euro using monthly average exchange rates, while SWAP volumes are calculated as a daily weighted average based on tenor. The statistics are published monthly by the last day of the month following the reporting period.
