The Joint Forum of Financial Market Regulators, which includes the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), concluded its annual meeting in Montreal, bringing together Canadian securities, insurance and pension regulators to discuss retirement-related consumer and market issues and the need for cross-sector coordination. Plenary sessions included an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development presentation on barriers retirees face in accessing high-quality financial advice and potential policy approaches to support better retirement decision-making, and a National Institute on Ageing presentation on helping Canadians better prepare for retirement beyond pensions. Discussions also covered how the current North American political environment could affect Canada’s regulated financial sectors, alongside regulator perspectives on rising costs, retirees’ purchasing power, and the practical challenges posed by retirement products and advice spanning multiple regulated sectors.
