The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has proposed a tiered model for future access to companies register information, seeking to preserve public access to core business data while limiting sensitive personal information to verified users with a demonstrated need. The consultation follows ASIC’s interim removal of officeholders’ residential addresses from purchased company extracts in February 2026 amid privacy and safety concerns. The model would provide more information free of charge, including officeholders’ names and current or ceased status, director identification numbers and whether directors have confirmed those numbers. Access would be divided among general, company, business and government users. From July 1, 2027, all registry users would be able to view officeholders’ year of birth, residential locality and service address, while residential addresses and birth information would be restricted to certain business users. The changes would align with the introduction of director identification number reporting from the same date. ASIC plans to announce its final approach by early 2027 and fully implement the new access settings from Aug. 1, 2028. A transition period would allow companies to update service addresses so officeholders’ residential addresses remain restricted.
