Bank of Indonesia announced that Indonesians can now make payments in Japan using QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard), by scanning the JPQR Global code at participating merchants through domestic payment applications without the need to exchange foreign currency. The initiative implements Indonesia–Japan QR code payment connectivity and is positioned as complementary to the two countries’ Local Currency Transaction (LCT) cooperation for rupiah–yen settlement. The cross-border QRIS function was demonstrated at a JPQR Global merchant at the Indonesia Pavilion of World Expo 2025 Osaka, with separate witnessing in Jakarta involving Japan’s Ministry of Finance. Japan’s Minister of Finance noted that QR code payment connectivity between the two countries was launched on 17 August 2025, alongside direct yen–rupiah transactions that have been available since 2020. Bank Indonesia reported that Indonesia–Japan LCT transactions totalled USD 5.1 billion in January–July 2025, up from USD 2.23 billion in the same period of the prior year, and that average monthly users rose to 2,072 in 2025 from 1,360 in 2024. At the initial stage, QRIS usage is available at World Expo 2025 Osaka locations including the Indonesia Pavilion, official shops and food trucks, and at selected merchants at Haneda Airport, with coverage to be gradually expanded to other regions in Japan. Implementation involves collaboration among Bank Indonesia, the Indonesian Payment System Association, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Payment Japan Association, Netstars and financial institutions from both countries.
