The Bank of Canada unveiled a new vertical CAD 20 bank note featuring King Charles III, the first Canadian bank note to carry his portrait and the first new monarch on the denomination in more than 70 years. The note will gradually enter circulation in late February 2027. The note introduces security features not previously used on Canadian currency, including a purple stripe with elements that spin, transform and pulse when moved. Its reverse retains the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, while other design elements represent Canada’s provinces and territories and plants culturally significant to Indigenous Peoples. Before issuance, the Bank will work with financial institutions, equipment manufacturers and cash handlers on the transition, including any necessary adaptations to bank note processing machines.
