The European Central Bank has published consolidated banking data for the EU banking system as at end-September 2024. The release shows that total assets of EU-headquartered credit institutions rose 5.01% year on year to EUR 33.12 trillion, while the aggregate non-performing loans ratio increased by 0.07 percentage points to 1.96%; aggregate return on equity was 7.65% and the Common Equity Tier 1 ratio was 16.26%. The quarterly dataset is compiled on a group consolidated basis and covers 344 banking groups and 2,349 stand-alone credit institutions, including non-EU controlled subsidiaries and branches operating in the EU, accounting for nearly 100% of the sector’s balance sheet. It includes indicators spanning profitability and efficiency, balance sheet composition, liquidity and funding, asset quality, asset encumbrance, and capital adequacy and solvency; reporters generally apply International Financial Reporting Standards and the European Banking Authority’s Implementing Technical Standards on Supervisory Reporting, though some smaller and medium-sized reporters may use national accounting standards. The publication also includes limited revisions to previously released data.
