The Securities and Exchange Board of India has proposed easing Know Your Client requirements for nonresident Indians, Overseas Citizens of India and foreign nationals. Individuals from Financial Action Task Force-compliant countries could complete KYC digitally without being physically present in India, while verified KYC records could be used across securities market intermediaries. The proposals would allow intermediaries to rely on KYC completed by entities overseen by other financial sector regulators and expand the overseas officials permitted to certify documents. They would also require clients’ email addresses and introduce safeguards for video-based verification, including spoofed IP prevention, concurrent audits and cybersecurity compliance. Public comments are due by Sept. 4, 2026.
