Payments Canada has started a series of educational webinars to support public engagement in its consultation on the legal framework for the Real-Time Rail (RTR), Canada’s forthcoming real-time payment system. The webinars are intended to help stakeholders prepare responses during the consultation period running from May 20 to July 2, 2025, which will be used to inform the RTR legal framework. The first session, held May 22, drew more than 270 attendees and provided an overview of Payments Canada’s mandate and the RTR’s design. Payments Canada described the RTR as a real-time gross settlement system with final, irrevocable payments, no batching, netting or deferred settlement, and settlement completed within seconds, supported by components including a real-time exchange, real-time settlement and a third-party exchange. The webinar series runs for the next three weeks with weekly Thursday sessions covering RTR access and participation, RTR recourse and compliance, and RTR fraud management, with bilingual delivery and Q&A.
