The Ministry of Finance of Lithuania said Finance Minister Kristupas Vaitiekunas will attend the informal Economic and Financial Affairs Council and Eurogroup meetings in Cyprus on May 22 and 23, where ministers are due to discuss European Union competitiveness, macroeconomic developments in the euro area, housing affordability and the continuity of the digital euro project. The agenda also includes an exchange on stablecoins and on how to meet rising spending needs without undermining long-term fiscal sustainability, while the Eurogroup will review the energy market situation against the European Commission's spring forecasts. Ahead of the meetings, the ministry outlined Lithuania's position on housing affordability. It broadly supports the European Commission's view that the first priority should be supply-side measures rather than large-scale demand stimulus, and argues for a more flexible supply of quality housing, targeted support for vulnerable groups and a long-term national strategy that treats housing as a cross-cutting policy area. During the visit, Vaitiekunas is also scheduled to meet Greek Minister of Economy and Finance and Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis to discuss Lithuania's upcoming European Union Council Presidency and negotiations on the European Union Multiannual Financial Framework.
