The Hong Kong Monetary Authority published its quarterly payment card statistics for Q3 2025 covering credit and debit cards issued in Hong Kong under the schemes of eight payment card operators. The data show growth in credit card circulation and transaction activity, alongside a decline in debit card transaction volumes and values for retail sales and bill payments. Credit cards in circulation reached 25.08 million by end-Q3 2025, up 10.0% quarter on quarter and 23.6% year on year. Total credit card transactions rose 6.2% quarter on quarter to 382.61 million and increased 16.3% from Q3 2024, while transaction value increased 6.4% to HKD 285.6 billion and 14.8% year on year, comprising HKD 173.3 billion (60.7%) in Hong Kong retail spending, HKD 103.1 billion (36.1%) in overseas retail spending and HKD 9.1 billion (3.2%) in cash advances. Debit card circulation is not reported, but debit card transactions in relation to retail sales and bill payments fell 9.6% quarter on quarter to 52.31 million and 5.6% to HKD 62.7 billion, and were down 3.2% and 8.3% respectively from Q3 2024.
