The Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) announced it and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) co-organised the inaugural International Carbon Markets Summit, billed as the first such event in Hong Kong, focused on scaling global voluntary carbon markets. The summit drew more than 200 participants from local and overseas regulators, carbon trading venues, corporates and investors. Discussions covered challenges in scaling voluntary carbon markets, expanding cross-border transactions and the role of technology in enabling market linkages, with speakers highlighting the need to harmonise international standards and best practices for credit issuance and secondary trading to support market integrity and growth. A fireside chat featured the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury and the Secretary for Environment and Ecology discussing Hong Kong’s strategic role in global carbon markets and the government’s latest initiatives.
