The Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo met with representatives of the German Embassy and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Kosovo to initiate a project to modernise the financial system infrastructure and broaden citizens’ access to financial services. The discussions centred on strengthening and further modernising the central bank and the wider financial infrastructure in line with the Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo’s Strategic Plan. Priorities included upgrading the central bank’s currency processing infrastructure, including automation and protection against counterfeiting, and enhancing institutional capacity to support regulatory developments. The project would also expand infrastructure for acceptance of electronic payments and promote financial education and financial inclusion initiatives aimed at reducing the use of cash. The governor linked the initiative to an existing European Union Office in Kosovo-supported project focused on safeguarding the integrity of the euro, following a recent cooperation agreement with the European Central Bank, and noted ongoing cooperation with Deutsche Bundesbank. Both sides agreed to continue discussions to prepare the project agreement and the technical arrangements needed for implementation.
