The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued a public alert about fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens related to The Bank of East Asia, Limited, following a bank press release and reports made to the HKMA. The HKMA reminded the public that banks do not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks that direct customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and do not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded hyperlinks. It advised anyone who provided personal information or conducted transactions via the fraudulent websites or login screens to contact the bank using the details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Police.
