The U.S. Department of the Treasury released preliminary annual survey data showing that U.S. portfolio holdings of foreign securities reached USD 19.3 trillion at year-end 2025, up from USD 15.8 trillion a year earlier. The survey was conducted jointly with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Foreign equities accounted for USD 15.3 trillion of the total, compared with USD 12.1 trillion at year-end 2024. Holdings also included USD 3.6 trillion of foreign long-term debt and USD 423 billion of short-term debt. The Cayman Islands attracted the largest U.S. investment at USD 3.1 trillion, followed by the United Kingdom at USD 2 trillion and Canada at USD 1.9 trillion. A final report with additional detail and possible data revisions is scheduled for Oct. 30, 2026. Preliminary results from the complementary survey of foreign holdings of U.S. securities as of June 30, 2026, are expected on Feb. 26, 2027.
