The Monetary Authority of Macao, Bank of China Macau and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Macau have subscribed to multicurrency digital green bonds issued by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, completing settlement through the link between Macao’s central securities depository and Hong Kong’s Central Moneymarkets Unit. Cross-border funds were settled through the mBridge central bank digital currency platform, marking its first use by Macao institutions for bond investment settlement. The transaction extends Macao’s use of mBridge beyond the trade settlement and remittance transactions conducted when the platform became operational locally in June 2026. It also demonstrates that Macao’s financial infrastructure can handle digital bond registration and custody, interconnected market settlement and mBridge-based cross-border funds settlement within the same transaction. The authority plans to continue upgrading local financial infrastructure and explore digital currency applications in additional financial activities, including further cross-border digital finance links between Macao and Hong Kong.
