The Central Bank of Oman launched its inaugural Research Symposium, establishing an annual platform to connect economic research more closely with monetary and financial policy. The initiative brings together researchers, policymakers and financial sector experts to identify emerging vulnerabilities, assess policy options and examine how global and domestic financial developments affect Oman’s economy. Initial sessions examined the global economic outlook and the implications of growth, inflation, monetary policy and changing financial conditions for Oman and the wider region. Research presented by the central bank and external experts covered the transmission of U.S. interest rate changes under the Omani rial’s peg to the U.S. dollar, the spread of economic shocks across domestic sectors and the effects of oil price volatility on foreign reserves. The symposium is an outcome of the central bank’s Research Enhancement Project, which seeks to improve the relevance and policy impact of economic and financial research. Priorities include developing internal research capabilities, expanding collaboration with external experts and academic institutions, and integrating research findings more closely into policymaking.
