The Central Bank of Barbados has announced that Scotiabank (Barbados) Limited customers can now access the BiMPay e-wallet, extending wallet availability to customers of all six commercial banks. Scotiabank had used the national instant payment rail since BiMPay launched in June, but its customers can now send and receive money using an alias such as a mobile number, make QR code payments and use Request to Pay. BiMPay processes payments between the six commercial banks and Barbados’ three largest credit unions 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, typically within seconds. Two of those credit unions already offer the e-wallet, while AffinityPlus Credit Union is connected to the payment rail and is expected to enable wallet access shortly. Customers have not been charged for BiMPay since launch, and any participating institution seeking to introduce a fee must first obtain the Central Bank’s non-objection and meet customer notification requirements.
