The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario refused to renew Masoud Asnafi’s mortgage broker licence and imposed a CAD 95,000 administrative monetary penalty on him. It also fined Approved Mortgage Brokers, an unlicensed entity controlled by Asnafi, CAD 10,000. The orders follow a contested hearing in which the Financial Services Tribunal found that Asnafi submitted false information in 18 mortgage applications, including bank statements, business registrations and tax documents. The tribunal held that brokers must take reasonable steps to verify information provided to lenders, including when a borrower supplies false information. It also found that Asnafi and Approved Mortgage Brokers falsely represented the entity as a mortgage brokerage.
