The Central Bank of The Bahamas rejected a social media flyer alleging that proposed US sanctions against a major bank threaten the stability or operations of large domestic commercial banks. It said the claims are false and that the Bahamian financial sector remains stable, secure and fully operational. The proposed US action concerns an unnamed large bank as part of a campaign against financial networks supporting the Government of Iran. The central bank said this campaign does not relate to The Bahamas, its financial system or any bank licensed in the country. The three Canadian affiliated banks named in the flyer remain well capitalized and are operating normally, while Bahamian dollar deposits at banks and credit unions are covered by the Deposit Insurance Corporation of The Bahamas.
