The Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) reported that Tanzania’s Insurance Commissioner, Dr Baghayo Saqware, has urged public officials in Geita Region to ensure government assets and large government projects are insured to limit losses when disasters occur. The call was made during a multi-region outreach tour focused on raising awareness among regional leaders and public servants about the importance of insurance and available opportunities in the sector, including becoming insurance agents and implementation of the Universal Health Insurance Act. Geita Regional Administrative Secretary Mohamed Gombati encouraged government employees to participate actively in the insurance sector and to ensure all development projects are protected through insurance, citing the scale of public investment and the need for compensation after disasters. TIRA’s Director of Insurance Market Supervision, Christopher Mapunda, said the authority will keep expanding insurance education to broaden insurance uptake and will work with stakeholders to increase understanding of insurance as protection for property, life, investment and health.
