The Thailand Office of Insurance Commission has outlined its 2026 programme on road safety and protection for motor vehicle accident victims, combining work with insurers and other partners to build model safe communities and schools and to widen public understanding of protection and benefits for accident victims. The initiative is framed as a shift from Road Safety to broader Public Safety, with greater emphasis on prevention and on using the insurance sector’s data and risk management expertise to reduce road accident losses. At a working group meeting on 21 May, representatives of the Thai General Insurance Association, the Thai Life Assurance Association, insurers and brokers discussed two projects for 2026: a road safety and motor accident victim protection project, and a youth safe driving project linked to awareness of rights under the Protection for Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Act B.E. 2535. Lessons from the 2025 pilot in Prachin Buri showed that local data analysis and coordination with area agencies can be used to tailor safety measures to local conditions. Implementation will continue in Prachin Buri and expand to six more provinces. The road safety and victim protection project will be extended to Nakhon Nayok, Nakhon Sawan and Suphan Buri, while the youth project will be extended to Saraburi, Chachoengsao and Nakhon Ratchasima, with the areas intended to serve as models for monitoring, evaluation and wider rollout.
