The European Commission has provided an implementation update on the Global Green Bond Initiative, reporting that its investment fund began operations in summer 2026 and that technical assistance is preparing green bond issuances in 15 partner countries. The Global Gateway initiative aims to mobilise up to EUR 20 billion in private capital for sustainable infrastructure while developing green bond markets in partner countries. Managed by Amundi, the fund is expected to approach EUR 3 billion, comprising up to EUR 2 billion from European and international private investors and close to EUR 1 billion in public equity. The Commission provides credit protection through the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus Guarantee. Alongside the fund, the initiative offers issuer support and a coupon subsidy facility intended to lower borrowing costs in specific cases, with further issuances expected across Latin America and the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, Asia-Pacific and the EU neighbourhood.
