The Central Bank of Costa Rica reminded the public that old-design CRC 5, CRC 10 and CRC 25 coins will cease to have value as a means of payment from July 1, 2026 and will no longer be valid for commercial transactions. The bank noted that this withdrawal had already been announced in January. Holders of those older coins will still be able to exchange or deposit them after July 1 through financial intermediaries across the country, including commercial banks, cooperatives and mutual institutions. The old CRC 10 and CRC 25 coins are being removed from circulation and replaced by smaller coins from the new coin series that is already circulating. The CRC 5 coin is being withdrawn entirely. The central bank had announced in October 2019 that it would stop minting that denomination from January 1, 2020 because its production cost of CRC 7.10 exceeded its face value, creating a nominal loss of CRC 2.10 per coin.
