The Alberta Securities Commission and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Integrated Market Enforcement Team announced that the Joint Serious Offences Team has charged Douglas John Vermeeren of Calgary with six offences under the Securities Act (Alberta). The case centers on alleged breaches of undertakings Vermeeren gave to the Alberta Securities Commission in a 2016 settlement, along with an alleged fraud involving a cryptocurrency-related investment and alleged obstruction of justice during the ensuing investigation. The charges comprise four counts of failing to comply with an undertaking to the Alberta Securities Commission’s executive director, one count of fraud and one count of obstruction of justice. Under the 2016 settlement, Vermeeren had undertaken to stop trading in securities and to refrain from acting as a director or officer of any issuer for 10 years. It is alleged he later traded in securities and acted as a director or officer of two companies. The release also alleges that, while on a cruise in 2022, he solicited funds from an individual for an investment in Blockchain Technologies Inc., did not use the invested funds as agreed, and then sought to dissuade that individual from cooperating with the Alberta Securities Commission’s investigation. Vermeeren’s first court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 5, 2026, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary.
