The Advisory Committee on Sustainability Reporting, chaired by the Malaysia Securities Commission, has deferred by one year the National Sustainability Reporting Framework requirement for reasonable assurance over Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions disclosures. The requirement will apply to Group 1 entities for annual reporting periods beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2028, rather than Jan. 1, 2027, while implementation for Group 2 and Group 3 entities will move to 2029 and 2030, respectively. The decision follows a review of the first 91 Group 1 listed issuers reporting under the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, which found that disclosure quality needed further improvement. During the extension, listed issuers must continue to state whether internal auditors have reviewed their sustainability disclosures or a sustainability assurance provider has independently assured them. Any independent assurance must use ISSA 50001, while ISAE 3000 Revised and International Organization for Standardization standards will no longer be recommended. The committee will also issue a Sustainability Assurance Guide to support providers and promote consistent application, with remaining proposals for the assurance framework to follow.
