The Thailand Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) held a proactive outreach seminar in Ratchaburi province under its “Insurance Alert” programme to improve insurance literacy among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the public, with a parallel focus on recognising and preventing insurance fraud. The session positioned insurance as a practical risk-management tool for businesses and households and aimed to help participants better understand how to use coverage effectively. The agenda covered “Insurance for SMEs”, including core insurance principles, cover types relevant to businesses, how insurance supports risk management, key considerations when purchasing cover, and case studies. A second session focused on “Insurance fraud”, highlighting varied fraud patterns such as electronic fraud, inducement to commit offences, and insurance-related scams, and noting potential misconduct involving intermediaries and other market participants. The OIC also linked the initiative to broader work encouraging insurers to design products aligned with provincial economic conditions, and described the programme as an annual effort originating after Thailand’s 2011 floods, with outreach expanded to universities and secondary schools.
