The Central Bank of Chile published preliminary first-quarter 2026 regional national accounts showing that gross domestic product fell in 10 of the country’s 16 regions, driving a 0.5% contraction in national output. Household consumption increased in 10 regions and rose 2.5% nationally, while goods exports fell 4.6% at the national level, also reflecting declines in 10 regions. By macrozone, the Center-South and, to a lesser extent, the North accounted for the negative GDP result, partly offset by a positive contribution from the Metropolitan Region. Nationally, the GDP decline was driven mainly by agriculture and forestry and mining, with services, especially personal services, providing an offset. Household consumption growth was broad-based across services, non-durable goods and durable goods, led by spending on health, transport, restaurants and hotels, tourism, food, clothing and automobiles. The fall in goods exports reflected weaker fruit and mining shipments across most regions, partly compensated by food and chemical exports.
