The Ministry of National Economy and Finance published remarks by Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, who is also Eurogroup president, at a Jacques Delors Centre event on Europe’s growth prospects. Pierrakakis identified the Savings and Investments Union as the leading priority for overcoming fragmented national markets, backed stronger common capital markets supervision and greater banking consolidation, and said the Eurogroup’s agenda this year would extend to technology, energy, natural resources and defense. Pierrakakis supported a stronger role for the European Securities and Markets Authority alongside national supervisors and highlighted work on market integration, supplementary pensions and securitization as ways to channel trillions of euros in bank deposits into productive investment. He also proposed auctioning forthcoming 6G and space spectrum at the European level, with part of the proceeds funding the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework and part directed through the European Investment Bank to support technology investment. More broadly, he advocated linking EU budget funding to reforms, following the Recovery and Resilience Facility model, while noting that no consensus has emerged on making common EU debt a permanent financing tool.
