The Central Bank of Chile has unveiled new CLP 10 and CLP 50 coins that will enter circulation gradually alongside existing coins. The CLP 50 coin will begin circulating in October 2026, followed by the CLP 10 coin in January 2027. Existing coins will remain legal tender and valid for normal use, with no exchange required. The coins retain their principal design features but use a steel-core production process that reduces reliance on higher-cost, more volatile nonferrous alloys such as copper and nickel. The CLP 50 coin keeps its current diameter but weighs 6.5 grams, down from 7 grams. The CLP 10 coin weighs 3.46 grams, reduces its diameter from 21 to 18.7 millimeters and has a smooth edge to distinguish it from other denominations. The central bank will coordinate the transition with banks, retailers, cash transport companies and other cash-handling participants.
