Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo Governor Ahmet Ismaili reviewed the country’s macrofinancial position and progress on financial sector reforms with IMF European Department Director Mateusz Szczurek during the 2026 IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings. The discussion continued the central bank’s engagement with the IMF on financial stability, institutional capacity and alignment with European and international standards, with Ismaili reporting that Kosovo’s banking sector remains stable and is performing well. The reform update covered implementation of risk based supervision and the Supervisory Review and Evaluation Process, stronger regulatory reporting and macroprudential oversight, and further alignment with Basel standards and European Union prudential requirements. It also addressed the development of the bank recovery and resolution framework, modernization of national payments infrastructure, preparations for Single Euro Payments Area membership and implementation of the TIPS Clone instant payment system. Other priorities included consumer protection, financial inclusion, anti-money laundering and counterterrorist financing controls, and risks from cryptoassets, cybersecurity and operational resilience. The two sides supported continued IMF technical assistance in banking supervision, financial stability, macroprudential policy, macroeconomic analysis, governance and risk management. Ismaili also reaffirmed the central bank’s support for the IMF’s new Southeast Europe Regional Technical Assistance Center as a mechanism for capacity development and regional cooperation.
