Egypt's Financial Regulatory Authority published an update on the first meeting of a coordinating committee with the Egyptian Exchange and Egyptian Tax Authority. Established in July, the committee has begun reviewing the tax implications of the Capital Market Law and developing recommendations for the treatment of securities transactions, investment funds and other capital market activities. The committee will review and update existing tax instructions, define mechanisms for collecting and remitting taxes on securities sales and investment fund activities, and oversee data links between the tax authority and the exchange. It will also develop joint guidance, standardize the tax accounting of listed and unlisted securities, classify investment funds and train relevant staff. The work coincides with planned market developments including securities borrowing for short selling, market-making, further development of the derivatives market launched on March 1 and regulation of hedge fund establishment.
