The Sustainable Banking and Finance Network (SBFN), together with the Capacity-building Alliance of Sustainable Investment (CASI), held a Sustainable Finance Taxonomies Roundtable in Johannesburg to identify opportunities for greater harmonisation and more effective implementation of sustainable finance taxonomies in Africa. Nearly 20 regional and local policymakers, practitioners, and taxonomy experts discussed the need to improve interoperability across existing and emerging taxonomies in the region and globally, including to facilitate cross-border investment and alignment with global standards. The session, held on the sidelines of the Africa Sustainability Forum, also surfaced recent developments, implementation challenges, and practical solutions to improve collaboration and alignment in taxonomy development and use. It forms part of the implementation of the Roadmap for Advancing Interoperability and Comparability of Sustainable Finance Taxonomies, launched at COP29 in November 2024 as a joint initiative of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, the International Finance Corporation, SBFN, the United Nations Development Programme, and the International Platform on Sustainable Finance. Participants called for platforms to strengthen regional knowledge sharing, further work on how taxonomies can support the Just Energy Transition, and measures to reduce complexity and reporting burdens for micro, small, and medium enterprises.
