The Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo, supported by the European Union Office in Kosovo and other domestic institutions, has completed an EU TAIEX programme project to strengthen Kosovo’s framework for preventing and combating counterfeit money and align practices with European Union standards. The work produced a draft law and an institutional and operational blueprint for national coordination and case monitoring. Implemented with experts from the Croatian National Bank over October 2024 to April 2025, the project developed a draft law defining the roles and responsibilities of key sectors and institutions. The proposed structure includes a National Counterfeit Money Centre at the central bank, a National Central Office within the Kosovo Police, a National Analysis Centre and a National Currency Analysis Centre within the Kosovo Forensic Agency, and a Kosovo Counterfeit Money Monitoring System to support the registration and reporting of cases. The draft law is to be taken forward through Kosovo’s legislative process.
