The Danish Financial Supervisory Authority has designated Nets as an operator of financial digital infrastructure, triggering enhanced requirements for digital operational resilience, cybersecurity and incident reporting. As a result, the supervisor will conduct IT supervision across Nets’ entire business, rather than limiting oversight to the activities covered by Nets’ authorisation as a payment institution. Operators of financial digital infrastructure are firms running core IT systems and networks that are critical for secure and efficient payments and other financial transactions. The designation takes effect from 1 January 2026, with the resulting obligations fully phased in by 1 July 2026. The authority noted that the designation process began before Nets’ outage in July 2025 and is not directly linked to that event, while adding that the incident underscored the importance of the decision. With Nets designated, seven firms are now listed as operators in Denmark: BEC Financial Technologies A.M.B.A., e-nettet A/S, Foreningen Bankdata, JN Data A/S, Mastercard Payment Services Denmark A/S, Netcompany Banking Services A/S and Nets Danmark A/S. The Danish Financial Supervisory Authority will continue assessing whether additional firms meet the criteria, meaning the list may be expanded.
