The Bank of Spain published payments statistics for Spain covering the first half of 2025, showing that non-cash payment transactions rose 8.5% year on year to 9.401 billion, while the total value increased 6.3% to EUR 6.4tn. Card payments accounted for most transactions by volume, while credit transfers dominated by value. By number of transactions, card payments represented 65.7% of non-cash payments, followed by credit transfers at 16.8%, direct debits at 12.2% and e-money payments at 1.7%. By value, credit transfers made up 88.5% of the total, versus 3.0% for cards, 5.5% for direct debits and 0.1% for e-money. Card payments increased 11.1% to 6.178 billion transactions and 10% by value to EUR 195bn, with an average value of EUR 31.6 per transaction, and remote transactions accounted for 19.0% of card payments by volume and 30.3% by value. Credit transfers rose 12.7% to 1.584 billion and 6.6% by value to EUR 5.7tn, while electronically initiated instant transfers increased 30% to 549 million and 115.8% by value to EUR 124bn. On infrastructure and payment systems, the number of payment cards rose 11.6% to around 119 million, or about 2.4 cards per inhabitant. Spain had 37,100 ATMs, down 0.9% year on year, and around 4.62 million point-of-sale terminals, up 7.4%. The National Electronic Clearing System processed 1.532 billion transactions worth EUR 1.35tn, and TARGET Banco de España processed around 3.9 million transactions worth EUR 7.47tn, with volumes up 4.8% and values down 8.4% compared with the first half of 2024.
