Sweden's Finansinspektionen (FI) has published new statistics indicating that the amounts stolen through fraud carried out via payment services have declined over the past 1.5 years. In the first half of 2025, fraudsters obtained SEK 575 million, but the number of fraud incidents remained at historically high levels at close to 143,000, prompting FI to urge banks and other payment service providers to keep prioritising customer protection. The sharpest reduction was in fraud where consumers are manipulated into executing a transaction. FI highlighted common methods including tricking victims into making transfers, stealing sensitive data, and sending fake invoices for victims to pay. The statistics are compiled twice a year from reporting by payment service providers under FI supervision and may be revised as any misreporting is corrected. FI also pointed to ongoing EU work on a new legislative package that could impose stricter requirements on payment service providers, including stronger transaction monitoring and wider access to reimbursement for affected consumers.
