The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina has published its annual report on card transactions in Bosnia and Herzegovina for 2024, showing continued growth in both the number of cards in circulation and the value and volume of transactions, with debit cards remaining the dominant product. By end-2024, Bosnia and Herzegovina had 2,585,419 active cards, up by 131,069 year on year, issued to customers by 21 banks. Debit cards accounted for 83.37% of active cards. Total transaction value reached BAM 18,425,493,564 in 2024, up 13.76% from 2023, across 186,045,013 transactions; the average transaction value was BAM 99 (down BAM 3), while average annual turnover per card was BAM 7,127 (up BAM 524). Of total transaction value, 68% was performed at ATMs, 28% via POS and 4% online; online transactions were split between 36% in-country and 64% abroad. The value of transactions abroad using cards issued by Bosnia and Herzegovina banks rose 34.34% to BAM 1,007,781,923, with 69% relating to purchases and 31% to cash withdrawals, while the value of transactions in Bosnia and Herzegovina using foreign-issued cards rose 11.41% to BAM 3,740,983,232, split between 46% purchases and 54% cash withdrawals. The report also records expansion in acceptance infrastructure over the year, with 1,767 ATMs and 35,035 POS terminals installed, including 34,687 in shops and 348 at bank counters.
