The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued an alert following The Bank of East Asia, Limited’s press release about a fraudulent website and an internet banking login screen that were reported to the HKMA. The HKMA reminded the public that banks will not send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks directing customers to banks’ websites to conduct transactions, and will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS. It advised anyone who provided personal information or conducted transactions via the fraudulent website or login screen to contact the bank using the contact information in the bank’s press release and to report the matter to the Police via the Crime Wing Information Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force.
