Bank Negara Malaysia announced the appointment of Dato’ Zabariah Mohd Yusof as a new member of its Shariah Advisory Council (SAC) for a two-year term, effective 1 February 2026, under section 53(1) of the Central Bank of Malaysia Act 2009. Following the appointment, the SAC will comprise nine members with expertise in Shariah, Islamic finance, accounting, audit and law, chaired by Dato’ Prof. Dr. Ashraf Md Hashim with Prof. Dr. Engku Rabiah Adawiah Engku Ali as Deputy Chair. Bank Negara Malaysia reiterated that the SAC is the highest authority for the ascertainment of Islamic law for Islamic financial business in Malaysia, advises the central bank on Shariah issues related to its Islamic financial activities, and that its rulings serve as references for Islamic financial institutions and may also be referenced by courts and arbitrators.
