The National Bank of Moldova published statistics on Moldova’s non-cash foreign exchange market, measuring banks’ purchases and sales of foreign currency against the Moldovan leu (MDL) and excluding transactions conducted by the National Bank of Moldova. The release covers interbank and intrabank activity across spot, swap and forward instruments, expressed in EUR equivalent. Spot turnover accounted for almost all reported activity, with interbank spot purchases and sales totalling EUR 46.678m and EUR 19.810m, and intrabank spot purchases and sales totalling EUR 491.968m and EUR 784.600m. Interbank spot trading was concentrated in EUR (EUR 46.420m purchases and EUR 17.149m sales), while intrabank spot volumes were dominated by EUR (EUR 292.724m purchases and EUR 449.879m sales) and USD (EUR 186.468m purchases and EUR 265.120m sales), alongside Romanian leu sales of EUR 62.171m and smaller volumes in other currencies. Swap turnover was reported only in interbank EUR at EUR 0.161m of purchases and sales, and forward turnover only in intrabank EUR at EUR 1.567m of purchases and sales. The series is compiled from banks’ regulatory reports submitted under the framework for setting the official MDL exchange rate, with transactions recorded on the trade date and converted to EUR using monthly average exchange rates. Swap volumes are calculated as a daily weighted average by maturity, and the National Bank of Moldova publishes the statistics monthly by the last day of the month following the reporting month.
