The Egypt Financial Regulatory Authority has initiated criminal proceedings and imposed sanctions against an unnamed consumer finance company following an investigation into an international school’s use of parents’ data to obtain loans. The company is barred from entering into new financing contracts for one month and must stop offering school-fee and club-membership financing until the authority reviews those products. Financial and credit obligations imposed on affected parents have been canceled. The authority also revoked the consumer finance license of the company’s chief executive, imposed penalties on several employees in key roles and called a general meeting to address the alleged violations and strengthen internal controls. The action followed breaches involving customer data verification, corporate governance, financing controls, credit inquiries and anti-money laundering requirements. These measures are separate from the Public Prosecution’s investigation, which the authority has formally notified of the case.
