The South African Reserve Bank reported official reserve assets of USD 75.95 billion at the end of August 2026. The total comprised USD 50.78 billion in foreign currency reserves, USD 17.995 billion in gold, USD 6.29 billion in special drawing rights and USD 894 million in South Africa’s International Monetary Fund reserve position. Predetermined foreign currency drains over the following year included USD 303 million in central government principal payments and USD 1.91 billion in interest payments. Contingent foreign currency liabilities totaled USD 4.58 billion, while USD 70.64 billion of reserves was held in currencies within the special drawing rights basket, including gold, and USD 5.31 billion in other currencies.
