The Central Bank of Cuba published an update on the rollout of a new channel for paying social security retirees and pensioners, extending the programme in Old Havana to allow payments via local commercial centres and the municipality’s Fines Office in coordination with community economic actors. Banco Metropolitano reported the third day of payments through the Old Havana Fines Office. The approach is being introduced gradually in April 2026 as recipients in the area are organised and coordinated for monthly participation. The Caja Extra pilot is being led by the Central Bank of Cuba with Banco Metropolitano, the Havana Government and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, and is intended to bring additional entrepreneurs, economic centres and local development projects into the payment network, including in some cases the possibility of delivering services at customers’ homes, as previously illustrated by the MSME MEC S.U.R.L. in Playa municipality.
