The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs published a letter from Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer requesting information on how Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte is dividing his time while also serving as acting director of national intelligence. The senators sought his official calendars and raised concerns about whether the dual role limits his ability to address housing affordability, safeguard confidential information and avoid improper use of federal resources. The letter also requested a detailed account of FHFA’s progress on lowering housing costs, including implementation of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act and action on recommendations the senators made in August 2025. It cited FHFA data showing house prices rose 2% year over year in April and Freddie Mac data showing the average 30-year mortgage rate was 52 basis points higher in the week ending July 23, 2026, than on Jan. 15, 2026.
