The Norwegian Financial Supervisory Authority published updated statistics showing total consumer debt in Norway reached NOK 172.7 billion as of 31 March 2025, up 6.8% (NOK 10.9 billion) over the past 12 months. It also reported that debt collection firms were handling 678,300 consumer-debt-related collection cases at end-2024, a 3.9% increase year on year. Data from Gjeldsregisteret AS show inflation (consumer price index) rose 2.6% over the same 12-month period, while the interest-bearing portion of total consumer debt increased 5.3% and non-interest-bearing debt increased 13.6%. Defaulted consumer debt in collection (original debt plus interest) totalled NOK 60.2 billion at end-2024, of which accrued interest accounted for NOK 25.3 billion.
